Dove reserach

                                                           Dove-

Changing target demographic audience-

The current target audience is aimed at both genders but specifically middle-aged women. We know this as adverts and posters use actors around that age to sell the product. However, we know that this product is used by many ages and gender as the company have different products like dove men. A new target audience would/ could be younger women and even teen girls. I feel like this would be a good way to get the product around as we know that teenagers use social media or even telling their friends things, they want to share which could be a good way of sharing the product. One way to achieve this is by making sure to use popular social media platforms that we know will reach the target audience. In addition to this, I would include younger actors in the advert and a situation all teenagers can relate to, so they know that the product is reliable.

Logo-

Personally, I feel like that logos are a massive impact in advertising as it is what attracts an audience. If you have an intriguing logo it is what will get the most interest. Therefore, I decided to change the logo as personally I feel like the logo didn’t look inviting or interesting; I wanted a logo that would want the audience to immediately buy a product. I decided to create three different styles as I would have a wider range of choice. The first choice was a bar of soap with the bubble writing dove in the bar of soap with bubbled around it because of the first product Dove released. I think the logo is quite fitting as it shows the audience what type of company it is and may even get the target audience higher if they are looking for a skin care product. The second choice/ design was just bubble writing of Dove coloured in blue with bubbles surrounding it.

Unilever research

Task 1-

What was the unilever founded? And who by?

What are the core values of the company? (based on own opinion and research)

How many brands do unilever hold?

List some of the main sectors those brands belong to (food)

Unilever was founded on the 2nd of September in the year 1929.Unilever is a company that focuses on products such as: food, beverages, cleaning products and personal care products that are very popular to this day. The main values the company Unilever focus on is integrity, respect, responsibility and pioneering. Personally, I agree as these values are important for any company as making sure to have respect for each other means things can run smoothly even with things like being able to take responsibility as it means people can help each other. In addition, I think values like kindness with each other would be a good value that the company would have not only with the workers but also the customers as well. Currently, the brand boast over 400 hundred companies and the brands that come up regularly with this company are products such as: Dove, Axe, Knorr and Lipton.

Task 2-

The brand I have selected is Dove. Dove is a skin care product that aims at both genders. Dove first started in 1957 originally in the US as a hand soap bar. The product was famous for it’s uses of being less drying on the skin so it meant it was reliable for people who has sensitive skin. Over the years the company have grew and now have more products including moisturiser and body lotion. The product is aimed at women mainly especially middle adulthood. Even though there are products for men the advertising are aimed for women. Dove do use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Tv advertising evaluation

                                        Tv advertising evaluation-

                        https://youtu.be/cho3L4UCtmE (Our video advert)

The brief that was given to our group is that we were to create a thirty second advert. The advert was to recreate a unilever product of our choice. Unilever is a company that promotes a range of different brands like: Dove, Lynx, Lipton and Ben and Jerry’s. It’s aim was to change the demographics of the product that we thought was best suited.

 The finished product and feedback-

What product did I choose?

As an induvial, we all chose different products and had original advert ideas before becoming a group. When we became a group, we all decided to choose a product that we thought was best suited to our style of filming and that would make it easier to fit the brief; therefore, we decided to choose Ben and Jerry’s. We chose Ben and Jerry’s because the advert was bright and fun, and we all had additional ideas to improve. This was like already having ideas for a slogan and how we would have certain shots, it made it feel more creative compared to the other choices.

Who is the current target audience for the product and who did you decide to appeal to? Why?

The current audience for Ben and Jerry’s is ages five to twenty-four. As a group we thought of changing the target audience to an older audience such as ages sixty and above. We chose to do this as the ages were aimed at younger people already and we knew the product can be aimed at all ages because it is a food product that mostly enjoys. In addition, we chose this product as we knew with the advert, we could use certain materials or styles to aim to the older generation. With this, we focused on colour design, slogans, lighting, costume and sound. We knew if we were aiming it to this audience, we would have to at least include an older person in the advert and as a group we were able to easily have an older actor.

How did you collect the feedback (comments / responses from others) on your finished advert from your target audience? Provide a summary of the main points.

I collected my information by using a google doc quiz and emailed and sent it out to people. We gave them a survey of questions such as what they think of the advert we have produced.

Looking through the results we begin to get an idea of how people view our advert. With the age range we knew that the average was seventeen year old's which means it may affect how they view the advert due to them thinking differently compared to a forty year old. In addition to this, the majority voted that the age range was sixty and over which is what we wanted the target audience to be; it helped us see that we were successful in reaching the target audience. Using a questionnaire helped us see if we were successful in producing an advert that hit the main targets.

Appropriateness to audience: do you think you managed to get the main message to your target audience you specified in pre-production. Would the advert have an appropriate impact on them?

I personally think the main message/purpose of the advert was reached. Our main message was to get an older target audience to buy ice cream and relive the taste. The ice cream is meant to make you feel young and free that you won’t want to put the ice cream tub down! In pre-production we had to plan our vision out and is why we decided to put two generations into the advert. The original storyboard is that the first part is of an older man looking down and picks up this Ben and Jerry’s tub. When he takes a bite, he becomes shocked and goes into a flash back of when he was younger. In the flashback we see him moving about quickly and everything is bright and free, he looks happy. It then goes out of the flashback back to the older man and he decides to take another bite. We think this was an appropriate advert as it wasn't discriminative and followed the rule of the bcap regulations. This means making sure my advert didn't have any: swearing, influencing younger people or discriminative actions or comment in the adverts. I think the advert would have an appropriate impact on the audience as I feel like it would give them a nostalgic feel and make them think of the good times in their childhood/ teen years.

Think about the technical and aesthetic qualities of your advertisement. Analyse your use of: mise-en-scene; camera; editing and sound.

For our advert, we wanted a summer aesthetic. We wanted this cause of having bright colours in our advert as well as ice cream being a summer food. With mise-en-scene, you have nine topics to focus on when creating a film; these are: colour design, costumes, iconography, setting, make-up, actors, props, lighting and sound. These are all key factors you have to think about when creating a film/advert,

Colour design-

The colour design is such an important part of our advert. We had to think about what colours we wanted to be featured into our advert. We knew that we wanted bright colours so we knew that would be like blue, yellow, red and green. Blue was a key colour of our advert as the weather would have a blue sky and the Ben and Jerry’s tub has a lot of blue on it. When thinking of colour designs it was important to think about editing as well. This was like in the editing process we realised we wanted everything to be a bit brighter so we decided to bring up the saturation. However, because of certain shadows from the weather it made certain parts look like a colour it wasn’t meant to. This made it difficult in the editing process. It meant for next time when we did a location reccy on Em’s grandad’s kitchen we focused on colour. We realised he had a lot of white in his kitchen and with a window of natural lighting it would look more blue on camera. This is not what we wanted. So when it came to filming we made sure not to film at certain angles to get that colour.

Costume-

Costume can represent a character from their emotion or even how they act. For our advert, we decided we didn't want any costumes that were out there and that we wanted it to be simple. So with our actors we made sure that there was no logos or labels on. The clothing was normal clothing like jeans and jumpers ect. We wanted to do this because it would have more of the audiences focus on the product rather than the actors.

Iconography-

Iconography is having certain aspects of genres embedded into your film/tv advert. This could be like a gangster genre being included into the advert. It is stereotypes of what you would think to be in a film. So sci-fi would be like colours blue and gray and scientist and technology. In our advert, I personally think that we didn't include many iconography as we wanted it all bright colours and we didn't get any inspiration from films to create the advert.

Setting-

Setting is a key part about a narrative/story line in film. With setting it sets the scene of what is happening to the character. With our advert, we had two settings which were: the kitchen and a park. We chose a kitchen as it was realistic and made it more authentic as well as causal. Our idea was to keep it natural because if you just have a person going into the kitchen to get ice cream it's not making the product look that in your face that you don't want to try. We then chose a park because it is the flashback of when the man is younger. We thought park would remind the audience of childhood as most of us spent our time on a field or at a park. The setting helps with our adverts story line so it makes it easy for the audience to follow along.

Make-up-
Make-up can be used for special effects to create a character or to match with the costume. In our advert we didn't use make-up but if we couldn't find an older actor we could of got a different actor and used make-up to make them look older.

Actors-

For actors we didn't need a lot, we only needed two. We needed someone who was or looked over the age of sixty. We was able to use Em's grandad for this as he was willing to help us and it made it easier if we needed to re film something as Em always had contact with him. Our next person had to be younger but didn't need a specific age. This is why we chose my friend Reece has I also always had contact and it was easier to collide a production schedule as we had a similar timetable.

Props-

For props we didn't need a lot. We wanted the main focus on the Ben and Jerry's tub. The only props we got for the advert was : the Ben and Jerry's ice cream, the spiny hat and the plastic spoon. We didn't want to go over board on the props because of the cost and to keep the advert simple. We knew having too many props would making filming harder such as keeping up with the continuity. The ice cream was used because it was the main product and the spoon was so it linked with the scene before. The spiny hat was to represent that it was his younger self and it also had bright colours which matched the theme.

Lighting-

For lighting, we were shooting in the day time so we had a lot of ambient lighting to use. Luckily, the day we were shooting the younger person we had quite bright lighting as it was sunny. This meant that we was matching the aesthetic we wanted to. The only problem we faced was making sure we were shooting at the right angle because of the lighting. We knew we couldn't film at a certain angle where there was a lot of shadow as you would see the camera crew throughout it; it would also mess up the continuity as the shadows would change.

Sound-

When thinking of sound for the advert, we knew we didn't want it to be too extreme. The sound had to match with the target audience well. We didn't want music that wasn't pleasing, we knew that is could annoy the audience and it wouldn't reach the target we wat which is to sell the product. We also wanted the type of music and sound to match up with our target audience which was sixty and above. So we went with elevator music because it wouldn't be too annoying and matched with the advert well. In addition, we used non-diegetic sounds such as a voice over in our advert. We used it right at the end to say ' relive the taste' so we were highlighting our slogan.

Effectiveness of content: Do you think your finished advert effectively sells the product to the specified audience through its storyline/narrative?

Personally, I think the finished advert sells the product to the specified audience through the story line/ narrative we created. I think this because, we used actors that matched up to the target audience. The story line would link well to the audience because we have a flashback reference so that if the audience get this product the feeling they get when they eat the ice cream is what you felt when you were younger. In addition, I think that the storyline is easy to follow and means that people are more likely to buy the product. As well as this, we knew that this storyline wouldn’t offend the audience as an older target audience may be offended more easily. We made sure things like sound wasn’t too quiet because as people get older you lose your hearing.

What was the effectiveness of the persuasion techniques you used to sell the product?

We decided to go more with a sub-conscious persuasion. This was like giving the nostalgic feel for the audience and making them remember what they were like as a child/teen. Having this persuasion links to our slogan relive the taste as the audience will be able to relive the feeling. It makes them think that they might be able to relive the taste of Ben and Jerry’s and make it feel like it is their first time trying it all over again. I think this makes it effective as it is such a nice feeling to be able to reflect on your personal life just by an advert; it makes it feel like the main focus is the audience as well as the product, and that it is the important part. In addition, it makes the older generation realise that it’s a product they can involve their family. So this is like if they have grandchildren they know they can share.

Clarity of communication: what was the message you were trying to send to the target audience? What were the main techniques you used to send that message? e.g., I wanted to tell teen audiences that drinking Bovril is not just for older people so I used younger actors and hip/colloquial language to appeal to them in the hope that young audiences would identify with them.

The main message of the advert was that the taste is so good that you want to relive it. In addition to that, it is for everyone to eat; this is why we used actors of all age ranges from 17-60. Having the story of the older man eating the ice cream and then having a flashback to when he was a teen eating the same ice cream; the flavor never gets old, and no matter how many times you have it, it feels like you are reliving it for the first time. However, our appeal was to the older generation and I feel like we did this well as our main character was the older person who we was aiming our target audience to. For once a fun product is something that everyone can use and tastes good.

Overall, do you feel your advert is fit for purpose? i.e., does it look professional and does it comply with advertising regulations? You must extract information from the ASA / BCAP code here as it will meet the requirements for Unit 2: GC1.

I personally feel that our advert fits the purpose. I think this because, it looks professional as we have logos of the product as well as keeping up with the continuity. What I mean by continuity is that everything is the same throughout each scene. An example of this is, if in one of the clips a girls hair is tucked behind her ears but the next scene its tucked in front without the audience seeing the action of her moving the hair forward, the continuity is off. It needs to be able to flow through the scenes even when changing camera angles. In addition to this, we made sure the advert was appropriate and was not rude. So this included: no swearing, no sexual comments and no racial comments.

Personal reflection?

How does the final advertisement compare with your original intentions? Reflect on your documentation, e.g., you storyboards and other pre-production, final advertisement and audience/peer/tutor feedback.

Overall, I feel like the advert matched up to the standards we wanted it to be. With our original idea, it was a bright and colourful advert and we mapped that out on our storyboard. This means that, we had an idea that could blossom into something great and in the end the advert matched up and was similar to the storyboard. When it came to the pre-production documents it was very organised and very thorough with the detail we put into it. We knew as a group that the pre-production documents were important and it is something that we could fall back upon if we needed to change something in our advert. Finally, the audience's feedback was positive and it is what we wanted the outcome to be; the advert was meant to make people smile at it and think that is actually quite creative how you have produced something that matches with the slogan. The advert meant that people could sit back and relax and have more of the positive side of social media and advertising.

Self-evaluation: Reflect on how satisfied you are with your final advert. Would you do anything differently if you were to undertake the task again? Finally, evaluate your own involvement in the project.

In conclusion, I feel like the advert was really successful. Although we had challenges, we overcame them and still managed to get the advert all edited and uploaded in time. If I had to undertake this task again I think what I would do differently is change the location. I feel like location was a problem in this task as everything about the location got changed quite quickly. I feel like if we were to choose a location I would choose the beach to match with the bright colours and to match the summer theme; especially when it focuses on ice cream. Personally, I feel like I did a lot of the work load. Em and I did a lot of the pre-production documents as well as filming because a member didn't want to contribute and another member got added to the group late. However, I feel like it was a positive thing to happen in the group cause it made me realise what i can produce to people with a lot of pressure on me. I think this advert went successful and that if I had to undertake it again I wouldn't change a lot cause I thought it was good.

Requirements for production-

                                                        Requirements for production-

Types of moving image production-

There is many types of media like: advertisement, the internet, magazines, television, blogs and many more. The type of media I produced was digital video along with digital sound. Once the production was completed, we need to find a way to distribute it; we used YouTube to distribute our ninety second production. We decided to use YouTube as it is easily accessible for people to watch and it is also free. Examples of moving image are ‘motion pictures, videos, and other theatrical releases, shorts, news footage (including television newscasts and theatrical newsreels), trailers, out-takes, screen tests, training films, educational material, commercials, spot announcements, home movies, amateur footage, television broadcasts, and unedited footage. These may be in electronic form.’1 There is a lot of distribution when it comes to media and there is many opportunities to make your production to be seen. This could be like people going to watch films in the cinema, online streaming or digital download. You could even have DVD/blue-ray but because times are changing, film makers are sharing their productions more digitally which shows the significance of cinemas cause of getting the full viewer experience.

Finance and sources of funding, requirements for any production-

It is important that you are financially stable to produce your own film; you have to be able to afford camera equipment, props, food for your cast as well as people’s time because that is your responsibility when creating a production. However, you have opportunities to have funding for your film.’ There are a wide range of national and regional funding incentives on offer to productions working in the UK.’2 This means more people have the opportunity to create and raise awareness of important causes over films.

This is like BFI do a funding of ‘£26 million of lottery funds per year to support film development, production’. You have companies like film4 and creative Europe as well; there are many opportunities to gain funding for your production. Having multiple funding's means you have a wider range to see which funding will be the most beneficial for your production. Even if you are struggling to get funding there are many ways you can find funding for your short production; you can enter screenplay and screenwriting contest however will need to pay an entry fee for the competition. When preparing for a production you need to start thinking about what requirements you will need to fund and prepare for your film. The first best thing to do when searching into funding is list all the equipment and props you need for your production. It is good to do this so you know what you need and then you are able to research the cost and even look for cheaper options when it comes to budgeting for your production. The first thing you need to consider is camera equipment, it is important that you have good camera equipment when producing a production. The only problem is that camera equipment is very expensive but you can always find cheaper options like loaning camera equipment.

Equipment -

Loaning the equipment works out cheaper, but it is better if you own a camera cause you are more likely to be more pedantic with your production, as well as being comfortable knowing how it works and having spare equipment just in case it breaks. In camera equipment you need to think about the things that come along with a camera. These consist of an SD card, a battery for your camera, tripod (it will make the camera still), lighting and even a microphone so that the sound in your film will be more clear. These certain equipment's already cost a fortune hence why people use funding to help them create their production as camera equipment is really expensive. A solution that could be used is that if your family or friends have certain equipment that you need maybe ask to borrow the camera equipment, it means it is more efficient and you will be able to have it for a longer period of time. If you are thinking of loaning the camera equipment  some recommended places are:hire a camera and Lens Lab. Lens lab is a very secure website for you to loan camera equipment as they get you to give forms of id and you sign hire agreements which shows that the company is legit and is safe to hire from and that people won't be scammed. Hireacamera has a range of lenses of choice so you have a variety of what you think is best for your film/photo. In addition to that, you have a choice of hiring things from Hireacamera such as: remotes, cables and bags, camera motion, sd cards, power, tripods and camera support.

Another thing you have to spend your money on when it comes to filming a production is the props you are going to use in the film. This could be something as simple as needing to use a broomstick to needing to use a bike. Props are important when filming as it brings the piece of film together because it represents the film and helps people like actors get into character. Thinking about props is important cause you want to make sure you get the right props for your production, but you also need to consider how much you are willing to spend on a prop and what it's significance in the film. So for an example like a broom stick, if you already own that prop use it as it works out cheaper for your production and then you are able to spend money if needed on different props. Another thing you will need to be able to consider is  post production work, 'Post-production takes time and, unless your editor is working for free, that means money.'3 If you are not able to edit or don't know how to you may pay someone to edit your film which is something you should consider in pre production when it comes to budgeting for a film. However if you do know to edit there is many free editing apps such as Hit film express. Being able to edit your own film works out cheaper but if you can't it is something you should consider this in pre production so you have the money ready.

What did you have to obtain for your Depict project ?-

When creating my own production, I had to start thinking of props and equipment I needed to use. Luckily , we didn’t have to pay for any camera equipment as we were fortunate to loan it; that meant we didn’t have to buy microphones, lighting, camera, SD cards and we were able to focus on the props for the film. This was helpful as we were able to bring our ideas more to life because of being able to afford the props.Things we began to think about is what we needed so that included: a cake (for the cooking show scene), missing poster, phone, earphones, a mask, keys, fake blood and a wooden spoon. Immediately, we began to think how we could get these props for a cheap price. Things like phone and earphones we knew we didn’t have to pay for as we already had and things like wooden spoon we knew an old wooden spoon could be used so we looked in our kitchen for one to make things cheaper and we knew we had it before production time; the missing poster could be easily made so it only cost a couple of pennies because we made it on the computer and then printed it out. The main things that we really needed to buy was a cake, this was Kris’s job as he wanted to pay for the cake. We wanted one that had a bit of colour to it and look quite fancy because it was what we imagined the cooking scene to look like. I think my group were quite successful when it came to handling budgeting as we got all the props we needed as well as the camera equipment and having a location where we didn’t need to pay meaning we were able to afford the things that we needed as well as making it cheap for us. Equipment we used was: a camera along with an sd card, tripod stick , microphone, ring light and fro props we used: cake, a mask, a poster, a wooden spoon, earphones, keys and fake blood. It didn't cost a lot of money in all honesty, we decided to use what we had around us to make sure we wasn't going to spend a lot of money.Things like the wooden spoon we just got from our kitchen cause it was old and needed to be binned; so if it got damaged or for an instance what we did which was cover it in fake blood we knew we wasn't going to be annoyed or have a massive loss over it. However, we did spend money on the fake blood and cake which came to a total cost of £19, it was £4 for the fake blood and £15 for the cake. Personally, I don't think we should of paid that much for a cake but it did look authentic for the film and it tasted really good when the cast was allowed to eat it!

Personnel-

In filmmaking you have certain people doing certain jobs, the jobs vary depending on which production it is and what type of media you’re doing. For a low budget film the jobs would consist of: producer, director, DP (director of photography), 1st AD (assistant director), 1st AC (A focus puller), actors, Gaffer (focuses on lighting), sound mixer, Hair and makeup artist and production designer.4 This list is the main people that you would get in any moving image production but these are key to a low budget film as even though it’s not a massive crew there is still people doing the important jobs that need to be done and will be able to get it done successfully. In addition, with a low budget film you will not be able to afford certain crew members compared to a massive Hollywood film so you have to pick out the main jobs that need to be done in a film/ production.

In television, it is usually consist of a lot of crew members and you have many departments in between production from key creative team which consists of directors, producers and screenwriters which is the main responsibility of television crew. However, along with that we have production department, script department, location department, camera department, sound department, grip department, electrical department, art department and hair and makeup along with wardrobe. In these departments it consists of many jobs and shows the major difference between a low budget production and television production. There is more roles to give out cause it is a higher budget meaning there is more opportunity to do more scenes that contain a lot of props as well filming in certain locations.5

Even though a television production is big, a Hollywood film production is on a much bigger scale. A Hollywood production is able to do more dangerous things on sets, it just means a Hollywood film production has a higher budget meaning more opportunities to do stunts. This means that you have to have more crew members in the film. For a Hollywood film production, you have your crew members that we have already talked about like Dp, producers and directors. But in a Hollywood production, you have crew members like grips (a technician on set who is responsible for building and maintaining camera and lighting setups), a boom operator (part of the sound department) and you have a script supervisor (so they can maintain the continuity of the production)6.

When it came to allocating jobs in our small group, we wanted it so everyone has a go at all the jobs we have so we all understand what the roles are like. The first day of filming I was behind the camera as well as directing, then I was just filming the next day and then I had a go at being in front of the camera and acting for both production days. I have never worked or used a camera before so I definitely gained some experience from that and understand that you have to take your time with and how it is important that don’t waste a lot time on one scene.

When we think cast and crew we immediately think of directors and producers but we never think of the crew behind the scenes. In post production you have music editors, supervising sound editors, editor and colourist. These crew members are just as important as the finalise the production.7 Missing a deadline in the film industry could mean you lose sale contracts because of you missing it. In addition to that, you’re not working by yourself in the film industry you are working as a team so missing a deadline might mean having your team work on weekends or sacrificing their own time to do it. When it came to my production, I successfully reached all my deadlines from pre-production, production and post production. To reach the deadline we made sure to balance the time out on our production schedule and make sure to stick to it. To ensure that the camera equipment is secure is knowing that you have the equipment you need on days of filming. To make sure that you obtain the equipment for production, write on your production schedule the equipment you need so everyone knows what equipment is being used for what scenes. It means everyone is prepared and makes production making flow. Having a professional media facility means you are able to film in a studio and is used to make films which is handled by the production company.

An example of this is the Hollywood production Titanic. Titanic is a $200 million budget including actor Leonardio Dicaprio and Kate Winslet. Problems they had were like the shooting was meant to be 138but grew to 160 days as many cast members became ill with colds, flu or kidney infections after spending hours in cold water.

Locations -

When it came to our production, we obviously had to think about locations. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to afford to pay to shoot in certain locations so we made sure to do it in a public place where we were allowed as well as it being safe. So we decided to film in a public place called the railway and then filmed in our college grounds as it was easy to get the paperwork signed off and having access to it at all times in the day.

This is why location recess helps as location recess means you look for locations and take photos so your team can decide what location looks better for your production.Once you have decided on what location you want it is important you are able to get your location release forms for it. Location release forms is ‘a document giving you a written permission to film at a location from the locations owner.’9 You will need this form after you have done your location recess and think it’d the right location for your production. Choosing our locations came quite easy as we immediately knew where we wanted to film.We knew that we needed somewhere  dark but open as we were filming a chase scene which led to us choosing the railway.

It’s a place I always walk past on my way back from college so I made sure to get photos and videos for my team to see how they thought about it. As soon as everyone agreed to it, we didn’t have to sign a location release form we only had to inform the police about what we were doing cause there was going to be some screaming in the film that we didn’t want the public to be concerned about. We then thought about filming in College as the actors we needed will be able to get there easily and it would not only be convenient for us but for them too as it wouldn’t take them a long time. However, there was a problem in the organising section of location. We were able to film in college but there were no classrooms free to film in; so we had to come up with a solution and film the cooking scene outside and the credit roll scene in a quiet corridor that no one really goes down. Even though we had that problem, it worked out well to film it outside as it gave the weirdness to the film which we wanted and connected to the classical tb british cooking show's in the summertime.

Materials -

When materials are thought about for a media production we instantly think of camera equipment, props and cast and crew. However, there is certain things :like food for the cast and crew, editing materials (like headphones) and backdrops people don’t think about or focus on. You need food and drinks for your cast and crew to keep them going through the filming process as you can have long hours that will tire people out. People rarely think of editing materials when it comes to predication but it is a key thing to think about because editing is what brings the production together; so having headphones to even be able to listen to the sound of your production is significant. Thinking about materials for a backdrop is important cause it helps make you think why that background is important for your production and why you want to the audience that. When thinking of materials you need to buy you also focus on the financial considerations when using those materials. This is like thinking about what you should put more money towards in the production, because if you pay for cheaper materials in editing the outcome might not be to a good standard compared to more pricey equipment. When thinking of materials you also have to consider the legal side to film production, things such as copyright which is a tricky thing in film making cause it means you have to be careful with materials you use (like music and costumes).

copyright

When talking about copy right, the definition of copy right means it protects your work and stops others from using it without your permission. Copy right protects your work by preventing people from copying your work, renting or loaning copies of your work, disturbing copies of it, making adaptions of it and putting it on the internet. When it came to my production it’s something we wanted to be careful of. This mean it affected the music aspect and being careful what songs to put into our film, we even considered making our music. However, it made us cautious of our work and even think of how to improve it which was a positive.Clearance is if you want to have copyright material you must have the right to do it if an outright transfer or a licence of the copyright from the copyright owner. Obtaining rights in this way constitutes copyright clearance. An example of this is if you want to use a certain piece of music in a film, you have to make sure you gave permission form that owner to use that piece of music and that’s why you use clearance to get it. Public liability insurance is what covers costs  of the claims that are made by members of the public. This means that if incidents occur in your activities or business the insurance covers personal injuries, loss or damage property and death. So an example of this is anyone involved in the media production is covered (that could be like actors) because they have the public liability insurance that covers injuries on set. A completion guarantee in the media industry is a bond provided by the guarantor that a film will be finished within the agreed time schedule. So an example of this is two people agreeing to do a month a filming and the deadline be in two months, it means it has to get done by then unless they discuss to change the deadline at an earlier time.

Regulation

A regulatory body is an organisation (for the public) or a government agency and are both responsible for legally regulating aspects of human activity. In a regulatory body the roles consist of: conducting inspections and audits, they draft issues and revise standards, they enforce standards by issuing fines and other consequences and impose requirements, conditions and restrictions. Not only that, but they also have responsibilities that include:  promoting fair trade, protecting fair trade, conducting hearings and protecting consumers.13 Ofcom is a communications service that a lot of people rely on; ofcom responsibility is to make sure that people get the best type of mobile service, broadband, home phone and tv and radio.14 Ofcom also is the company that regulates the bbc, having ofcom regulate the bbc means it allows the bbc to consider and potentially resolve complaints before hey reach ofcom. This means Bbc is different to other companies that are also regulate by ofcom as they are able to resolve certain situations without ofcom being involved. The bbfc stands for the British board of film classification; the bbfc helps families and viewers understand what film or tv is right for hem to watch by providing them with guidance to avoid what’s not right for them. So this could be like saying what is contained in the tv/film e.g. violence, foul language and age restrictions.

Trade unions and trade associations-

"Trade unions provide assistance and services to their members and bargain for better pay and conditions for all workers." It means that the trade union have bought significant changes such as: a national minimum wage, the abolition of child labour, improved worker safety, improved living standards, improved parental and equality legislation. PACT and BECTU is a major motion picture agreement which means it's an agreement which covers the terms that are significant terms and conditions for a crew on major motion pictures.16 A trade association is organisation not for profit made up of a companies/ individuals with common interests.17

Assignment 1 depict !

Pre production work for my ninety second production-

Production schedule-

Once we had planned on what we wanted to do for our short production, we knew it was important as a group to form a production schedule so then we would be able to achieve and complete the scenes we needed to do in time. We first focused on what scenes would take up the most time to film, and knew that we would have to shoot those longer scenes on a Saturday where we have longer period of time. We faced difficulty when producing the production schedule as we had to manage finding time where the three of us were free. This was like working around our jobs, college and extra activities cause we needed everyone to be there so we were able to handle all the equipment we had hence why we decided to choose a Saturday to film. In addition to that, having a production schedule was significant so we knew when we had to borrow camera equipment, the talent as well as ordering props.

Reflecting-

Reflecting back on the production schedule, overall the schedule worked well. It was very organised which was important because it meant if we were organised we could easily create a back-up plan which would help us keep up to date and be able to stay on track. As well as that we were very pedantic when it came to the schedule as we wanted to make sure times were set up so if any of us had any plans after we would be able to plan around the filming process. Not only that, we made sure to even the schedule out so we could give the film our full focus and add the attention to detail after in the post production.  However, I think we overestimated how quick filming the scenes would take. We could of easily saved a day if we knew that most of the scenes would be easily achieved in one day. Because there were certain scenes being filmed on different days, meaning we understood that things might change like weather which messes up the continuity of the film.

Story board-

Before filming any kind of film/production, it was important that we knew exactly how we wanted the production to turn out. This meant that we used a storyboard so we could map out our visions of what we want to produce. It was significant because it helped us through the filming and making sure we are having a similar outcome to our storyboard. What we focused on first was the duration and location of the each shot. We knew that it was a ninety second production so we had to be careful and pedantic with what we choose to do. We then focused on drawing it out because we knew it would help up when it came to actually filming cause drawing it out meant it would also help us in the post production process as we also wrote out what sounds we want to use whether that be ambient sounds and asynchronous sound. Sound was an important thing to think about before going into post production as well cause we had to make sure we had the right equipment for that scene to also record the sound.

Reflecting

Focusing on the story board of what went well and what didn’t I don’t think the story board was too bad.It was detailed with clear diagrams of what we imagine the scenes to look like and even estimating how long we want that shot to last for. However, I think we added too much in the story board; what I mean by this is that we added too many shots in meaning we were making the process harder as we were trying to fit too much into a ninety second film.

Budgeting-

Budgeting is a very significant part of production work cause you have to make sure you can afford certain equipment. This meant that we had to start thinking of things we needed for filming, we started to list things we needed so this was like: fake blood, mask, camera equipment (tripod, camera, lighting, microphone) and cake. Luckily we didn’t have to pay for the camera equipment but we were still responsible for buying the things that were going to be included in our film. To solve this problem we made sure to look for deals and low prices on things we needed. We made sure to go on websites like Amazon because we knew there would most likely be deals and also have fast delivery.

Reflecting

I think budgeting was successful and had a positive outcome we didn’t spend a lot when it came to  buying props and we were thinking smartly when we were buying. Thankfully using websites like Amazon meant delivery was quick meaning we didn’t have to panic and buy back ups just in case it didn’t arrive on time.

Email to the police-

Because we planned to do a chase scene, we knew that the location we were filming in would voice some concern. We wanted to take these precautions as we were filming a chase scene in the dark and one person would be wearing a mask which means the public could take this the wrong way. This is why we decided to email the police to inform them ahead of time so we didn’t get in trouble and it also meant it didn’t mess up our production schedule cause no one would stop us from filming then.

Reflecting-

I think emailing the police was another success for our group. The email was very formal and we made sure not to waffle in the email and get straight to the point. It was also successful because it meant we were able to continue with the chase scene and it didn’t mess up the main plot of our production as well as the production schedule.

Shot list-

A shot list was an important document in my opinion. It had the location of where the shot would be, the narrative behind the shot, what shot it would be (for example an establishing shot) and sound that will be included in the shot. This was important cause it had all the information on and if for an instance we lost the storyboard we could always use the shot list. It meant we could be pedantic with the details we were writing and would help in the filming process.

 Reflecting-

Looking at the work we did for shot list I am personally proud of it. It helped us as a group focus more on camera angles and shots and how it would be helpful and make the film look better by using those shots. It helped plant ideas into our head and improve the production. However, in some parts it made us overthink the amount of shots that needed to be used. In some aspects of the film we should of just used basic shots to not over complicate it. This was like the chase scene, we wanted different angles but this meant having to think how many shots we would be doing and when it came to post production managing to keep the continuity of the film.

Talent list-

Talent list was significant part of the pre-production work. It meant that we have evidence that the people that are included in the production give us permission to share our work to people. This meant our group had to print off talent release forms and give them to people who were either going to be in front of the camera or behind it and then make sure it was uploaded on the computer. It was very important that this was all done before production started.

Reflecting-

The only thing I think we could improve on when it came to the talent release forms was to get it done at an earlier time because we only managed to complete it right before production started. It meant that we had to keep making sure that the people that were going to be in the film when we needed them to so we could follow the production schedule successfully.

Locations-

When thinking of locations we knew we didn’t want to do the whole film in college; we wanted to take the advantage of being able to take out the camera equipment and film in a different area. Using different locations also meant we could explore and find a location that fitted the vibe of our production. This is why we decided to choose the old railway that is now a walk path but when it’s night time it’s super dark. This is why we all agreed to film there cause we knew it would be quiet as well as it fitting in with the horror genre stereotype.

Reflecting-

When looking back on choosing the locations the only thing I think we should of improved was thinking of back up locations to use so if the weather conditions were terrible we would be able to film in a different place then it wouldn’t mess up the shots and the continuity of the film.

Risk assessment-

Risk assessments are written to make sure everyone’s safety is accounted for. Writing one for our production was important so we could make sure everything we were doing was safe and no one would get injured. Writing the risk assessment meant we had to come up with solutions in order to create a safe environment. This meant thinking of all the possible injuries that could happen when filming and how to prevent that and if it does happen, how we could help make sure no other injuries happen.

Reflecting-

Personally, I think the risk assessment was detailed and had the main possible injuries someone could have on set. In addition to that, the solutions we came up with wasn’t silly and actually helped when being on set cause we were extra careful with the equipment as well as our selves.

Depict Evaluation

                                                                 Depict Evaluation-

We were assigned to create a ninety second production; It meant that to create a ninety second production we were responsible for making sure we had: a story board, a shot list, talent release forms, finding locations and budgeting. For this production, we were not only doing the planning of the production but we would also be responsible for the actual filming process as well as post production work.

When we were assigned the task, as a group we had to think of ideas of what we wanted to do for our production. So we started off by making a mind map of possible ideas we wanted to do. We were very drawn to the idea of doing a horror-comedy; the genre is what we all enjoyed watching so we knew it would be fun to create a horror-comedy. We also knew that because we enjoyed horror-comedy’s it would be easier to include the iconography of a horror-comedy into it and be precise with the details we wanted to include ,like blood . When also thinking of ideas we started to think of what locations we wanted to film our production, so we started to list locations as we knew that we wanted it to be in an outside area to create a chase scene. Having ideas helped us paint a picture in our head of what we wanted our film to look like. After discussing ideas we knew we wanted to include a a chase scene as well as a cooking scene to include the comedy side to it.

Once we got the ideas and decided on what we wanted to do the next part was to start planning and fill out documents before we did any filming. The documents I had to fill and was responsible for were: shot list, production schedule and risk assessment. As a group we decided to contribute and take it in turns to fill out the minutes and we all did the talent release forms together. We all contributed to these forms cause we thought it would be easier to share that so then no one would forget. I was responsible for shot list which means I had to write out each shot. This means I wrote out: where the location would be, the narrative of that shot, what type of shot we are doing (for an example long shot or establishing shot) and the type of sound or music that will be used in that shot. It was important that the shot list got done so we had a pedantic plan that could help us in the production process. The production schedule was also important as it had to be detailed and correct because it was giving the information of when we were filming and also editing. Then I had the role of the risk assessment, this was significant to do as there is always risks when it comes to production work as well working outside. Personally I think I contributed a lot when it came to filling out documents, I made sure they were filled out on time and made sure they were detailed enough.

I think for most of it the planning did reflect on the finished work we had. Even though we changed a lot, we still stuck to the main idea of what we wanted to do. Not only that, but if we didn’t plan I don’t think the film would of turned out how it did as well as realising that we needed to adjust some plans to improve our production. When it came to planning we were very optimistic with what we wanted to achieve. We realised that adding too much into a ninety second production wouldn’t be helpful and would make it hard when it came to the post production section. In my opinion, I think it was helpful that we changed plans while filming as it was helping us improve and create solutions and work as a team.

Throughout the filming we made a lot of changes. Originally, we had a bystander scene that would show a random person finding a dead body. We realised that it wouldn’t work well in with the production cause it didn’t make sense and would also be wasting production time. So to improve this we had added a missing poster at the end so the audience could understand the main plot without making it more confusing by adding loads of shots. There was also changes when it came to the chase scene; we had problems due to the weather so we had to make some changes and have the chase scene be shot in the daytime. Our solution was to put the first scene in black and white to keep some of the continuity so when it came to the chase scene it didn’t look terribly different. It also means that when it comes to the cooking scene the colours would come out more vibrant and make the film more light hearted and have the comedy aspect come into the production.

Personally I think the cooking scene was successful. It was successful because it went to plan and how we imagined. It went successful because the camera quality was good and managed to stay in focus. Along side that, the lighting was good which helped with the camera quality especially when we wanted because it was going to bring the comedy aspect to into it. Not only that, but in post production editing went successful which brought the scene together. We added effects such as tv static filters and music which worked really well together and made it better than we imagined. Another scene that I thought was successful was the opening scene to our production. It was successful because at first I was curious how we were going to make sure the quality was good when shooting at night. However,  it turned out great cause we made sure to bring good lighting and it helped to keep the camera in focus. We also managed to film the scenes we needed quite quickly; we expected for it to take quite a long time but because we all worked well together it made the filming process efficient.

When looking back and watching the film we created, I already knew that there were improvements that needed to be made.Improvements I saw that needed to be made was the chase scene. When coking up with the idea of a chase scene we knew it would be hard to film and it would take longer time compared to other scenes. It needs to be improved because there wasn’t a lot of continuity in this scene; in the opening scene the character is wearing no coat and when it jumps to the chase scene the character is wearing a coat . This is because it was filmed in the day time as well as their being poor weather conditions. To improve this next time I will make sure to check the weather forecast when planning out the production schedule. It meant that this scene also affected post production work as the chase scene didn’t flow because of cutting out certain clips so it could make more sense for the audiences point of view. Another scene that needed to be improved was the credit roll scene. It was the first scenes to be filmed meaning it was something we definitely needed to improve as we were learning by doing when going through the whole filming process. When in post production we realised the credit roll scene was out of focus meaning we had to spend time editing to make it a little bit more clear. To do this we had to go on colour (Adobe premiere 2021) and raise the saturation; we came up with the solution to add effects like tv static to make it look like it was on purpose and a posture we got out of it was that it improved it a little bit because it made sense to the film.

Overall, I enjoyed this project. I was able to get creative and think outside of the box with how I wanted the outcome of my film to look like. What I enjoyed the most however, was being able to learn and understand how to work a camera. I have never used a camera before  especially to entertain others so it was interesting to explore and look at it from the perspective of a creator. It was fun being able to work with people I wouldn’t usually work with as our ideas bounced off of each other and everyone has interesting imaginations which helped improve the film; as well as understanding how much time goes into pre-production, production and post-production work.
